How to Declutter Before Kids Start School

It is about that time of the year where families are finishing up vacationing and reality is slowly sinking in that school is right around the corner. You are looking around the house and notice old things from when your kids were 5 and now they are 12. You are also noticing that your son is walking out of his room with pants that are not quite fitting. There is a collection of unwanted things that need to be gathered to give you that refreshing feeling in the home again and in the name of preparation hoping to have your kids prepared for the next school year. I have been in these shoes multiple times especially since I have 4 kids that range in different age groups. How to declutter the house before school starts? So the question that may run across your mind is where to start to ease the feeling of anxiousness? These feelings may come with trying to get the kids ready and prepared to have a successful school year.

How To Declutter In 5 Easy Ways Before School Starts

  1. Get a Calendar or Planner-When attacking a task such as decluttering it is so important to have a plan. Not just a plan but also getting the support of others when needed. I would encourage getting a big calendar or planner that can be placed on the wall so the whole family can see. Getting the family together and discussing the task of decluttering and what items need to go would be the very first step. These ideas and suggestions can be marked on the board along with a layout of when things need to be done so that a fresh start of the school year will have the highest chance of being successful.

  1. Purge unnecessary papers from previous years-I must say this is something I personally struggle with. How many of us are parents that love collecting on our children's graded papers, projects, and artwork throughout the year? I am guilty, I must admit. I am the type of person that believes I may need those papers for later or that artwork is so sentimental to me. We are proud of our children and the success they have through the year. However, that adds up and you will soon have a clutter of papers. To relieve this and be prepared for this upcoming year's worth of excellent work from your kids, go through those papers and select the few that may be great keepsakes and recycle the rest. You can also create artbooks with your children's work so it's all in one place. A great example of a keepsake would be this activity from my Father's Day Keepsake Sentimental Interview Question post. When you come across confidential papers take time to purge those items and be confident by using a home shredder. Check out some of these handy shredders below.

  1. Take time to see what clothes fit-We all know that kids grow like wildflowers. One moment they are fitting everything and the next moment they are needing another pair of shoes. The wonders of growth spurts. Have a day where the kids try on their clothes and shoes. Whatever doesn't fit you can put them in a bin either for younger siblings, cousins, friends, or donate to those in need. This will help with the closet clutter that sometimes sneaks up on us when we are not watchful. If you are deciding to save some of the clothing make sure to store them in a storage tote to preserve the items longer.

  1. Donate Donate-As you are decluttering, have the kids gather toys and any additional items that they no longer want. This can include your kids backpacks if you are planning on getting a new one for the upcoming school year. Anything that is still in good shape, look up your local donation center and take the kids to drop off those items. This is a great way not only to declutter but to give back to those in need. This is a great opportunity to teach this lesson to your children.

  2. Create and organize a work desk area-Now that school is starting back it is so important to have an organized space for your kids to complete their homework. If they already have a space make sure it is clean and organized with the necessities such as pens, papers, pencils, and erasers. Having a clean uncluttered space will set your students up for success.
